I’ve heard about a place people call hell; it sounds pretty bad. Based on what they say, I’m pretty sure it’s Las Vegas. I just returned from the Golden Crown Literary Society 2018 Annual Conference and Award Ceremony. It was held in Las Vegas. Despite the extreme heat and large crowds, the conference was amazing. I met a lot of new writers and saw some old friends. Additionally, I learned so much from the author panels and master classes presented at the conference.

 I’d like to mention one in particular. Radclyff gave a master’s class on story structure that I found particularly useful. I had done a bit of research on story structure myself when I first started writing, but Rad’s lecture reinforced a lot of what I had discovered, in addition to providing some new information and some great references. I’m currently reading a book she recommended called “Writing Screenplays that Sell” by Michael Hauge. If you’re like me you don’t write screenplays, but this book provides valuable information that is applicable to novels as well as screenplays.

Michael Hauge is a story and script consultant as well as an author in his own right. In one sentence Hauge summarizes what a screenplay or novel needs to be successful. “Enable a sympathetic character to overcome a series of increasingly difficult, seemingly insurmountable obstacles to achieve a compelling desire” (Hauge 4). Fortunately, throughout the rest of his book, he breaks it down a bit more. The entire book is very useful for thinking through your story concept before you start writing. Even if you are not much of a planner and tend to write by the seat of your pants, the information will help you think through the critical elements of the story even if you are doing it as you go along. I highly recommend this book as a starting point for learning story structure and putting it into practice with your next story.

And as always read—to be a better writer we must read more books.
